Enjoying retirement

or caring for the elderly ?

It is sensible to plan for the years ahead. We are all likely to live longer than our forefathers and many now live beyond their 90th year. People retiring at 60 or 65 are mere striplings in comparison.

Planning ahead means starting at or even before retirement - and not just to provide wealth in retirement, but to prepare to pass that wealth to the next generation, or to a worthy cause of your choice. And as we grow older, health and being cared for become significant issues.

As members of the Law Society's Solicitors for the Elderly group we have considerable experience of clients in retirement, and can assist in many ways :

~ have you made or recently reviewed your will

~ how do you make gifts of money and property to reduce inheritance tax

~ are you able to give away savings but still keep the interest payments

~ can you provide for your spouse with a mental illness and still leave something for your children

~ have you made an Enduring Power of Attorney (an "EPA") to guard against mental illness or decline

~ when do you apply to the Court of Protection for registration of an EPA or administration of an elderly relative's financial affairs

~ how do you prepare to meet nursing home fees and will the local authority cover the expense

~ what are the advantages of sheltered housing - and the pitfalls

We can advise on these and many other aspects of your retirement years.
